What Is Watch Protection Film? Everything You Need to Know
Watch protection film is a thin, clear layer of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that is cut to the shape of a watch and applied to its most exposed surfaces. It takes the scratches and scuffs from daily wear so the metal underneath doesn't. Good film is virtually invisible once applied, and it can be peeled off cleanly at any time. You will also see it called watch PPF, short for paint protection film, because it comes from the same family of material used to protect car paint.
What is watch protection film made of?
The film is TPU, a flexible plastic that is clear, tough and elastic enough to follow a curved surface. LunoGuard film is built in five layers:

How does it work?
The film is a sacrificial layer. When your watch brushes a desk, a door frame or a zip, the contact lands on the film and not on the polished or brushed metal. If a piece of film eventually looks worn, you peel it off and replace it. The watch underneath is untouched.
Is it the same as car paint protection film?
It is the same idea and the same type of material, scaled down. Car PPF is laid over large panels. A watch has small, tightly curved surfaces, so the film has to be cut very precisely for each reference. A piece cut for one watch won't sit properly on another. LunoGuard templates are built from a 3D scan of each watch model for that reason.
Is it the same as a screen protector?
No. A screen protector is a single flat sheet for a flat display. Watch protection film is a set of shaped pieces that cover the metal as well: the bezel, the lugs, the case edges, the caseback and the clasp. Those are the parts of a watch that scratch first.
Where is it applied?
A LunoGuard kit covers the dial crystal, lugs, caseback, case edges, clasp cover and clasp edges. Most kits also cover the bezel. Kits for watches with a fluted bezel leave the bezel uncovered, because film can't be wrapped cleanly around fluting, and the product page says so.
Can you see it on the watch?
From a normal viewing distance, no. The film is optically clear and sits flush with the surface. If you look very closely in direct light you may notice a faint edge where a piece ends.
What does self healing mean?
The top coat softens slightly with warmth, from your wrist or from sunlight, which lets very fine surface marks in the film relax and fade. It works on light marks in the film. It won't repair a deep cut.
Does it damage the watch or leave residue?
No. The adhesive is designed to hold firmly and then release cleanly. The film lifts away without leaving adhesive behind or marking the finish.
How do you remove it?
Warm the film gently with a hairdryer, then peel it away slowly. A little warm water or isopropyl alcohol helps it release.
Does it yellow, and how long does it last?
LunoGuard film is formulated to resist yellowing and is covered by a 10 year warranty against yellowing and cracking. How long an individual piece looks fresh depends on how hard the watch is worn. The clasp takes the most contact, so those pieces are usually the first to be replaced. Every kit includes a full spare set for that reason.
Can you apply it yourself?
Yes. Most people apply a full kit at home in about 15 minutes. The kit includes the film, a spare set, installation solution, tweezers and a microfibre cloth. Our installation guide walks through each step.
What it won't do
Protection film stops hairline scratches, light scuffs and everyday contact marks. It isn't armour. A hard knock can still dent a case, and a deep gouge can go through the film.
